Repairing A Damaged Section Of Chain Link Fence On Your Property

When our family quickly began outgrowing our home, my husband and I couldn't decide whether to add onto our current home or move into a larger one. One day, when we were checking the local area looking for "home for sale" signs, we saw a sign we couldn't take our eyes off -- there was a large plot of land for sale for a great price in a great location. We had never thought of building our own home before, but after a little research, we realized that it wasn't as costly as we thought, especially considering the great deal we got on the land. The entire process was a learning experience, but thankfully, the building team was very pleasant and helpful. We now love our new home, and I am excited to share our experience on our new blog. I also plan to post many planning and construction tips!

There are a lot of ways that the chain link fence around your property could be damaged, but most of the time it is the top rail or a post that needs to be replaced, not the fabric itself. You can do the repair yourself and hire a fencing contractor to make the repairs if you don't want to attempt the repair yourself. The process is pretty easy, and the time involved might only take up a Saturday afternoon if you gather parts and tools before you start working on it.

Assessing the Damage

The first thing you need to do is check the fence for damage and determine just what needs to be replaced. If the top rail is all that is really damaged, you can repair it with a little effort and a new section of top rail. If there is damage to the post, you can still replace it without getting into the whole process of replacing the entire fence. For a post, you will need to loosen it up, and digging it up is the best way to do that. Of course, replacing the post is more work, but if it is bent, it might not be usable at all.

Hiring A Fence Company To Make The Repairs

If you choose to have a fence company come out and make the repairs to your fence, they will need to come look at the job to give you a price for the work. The cost will be affected by the amount of materials needed as well as the crew that will be needed to fix the fence quickly and correctly. If the fence company does the repair work, they will often warranty the work, but the terms of the warranty will depend on the manufacturer of the fencing materials.

Replacing The Top Rail

If the top rail is the primary part of the fence that is damaged, you do not have to replace the entire rail. The top rail can be cut and then a new piece added into the spot where the damaged rail was. You will need to get a rail section that has tapered ends on it so that it will slide into the old rail on either side of the damage and you might need help to pull the fabric back into place so you can attach it to the top rail. Once it is stretch back over the rail, it will be very unlikely that anyone will even notice that the sectioned that was repaired.
